He was walking not like a king……but was treated as a king

The dramatic scene goes like this : In to the busy Indian Consulate in Dubai, a stretcher with a broken legged man was carried by a group of fury people. The stretcher was placed there inside by this upset people and left away. The man in the stretcher was not able to move as the plaster was fully covered of his entire leg. It seemed his thigh was broken. Neither he was having a walking stick nor somebody to help to stand up.

It is heard at that time that the history of this man was reported by a newspaper early, saying that a man was lying under a tree for 3 days with his plastered leg after having fallen from a building top.

Now this orphan inside the Consulate created a dilemma to the authorities.

While this dramatic scene was happening Smt. Janakidevi, the Art Of Living volunteer Teacher from Dubai, along with her seva team was there for other purpose. The condition of this “illegal” human who was working just for his livelihood was now so complicated both physically and documentaly. He was not able to move. He was not willing to eat and drink as he feared of going to toilet. More over as you understand he is a well-defined illegal worker who is not having even a passport which was taken away by somebody !

His identity as an Indian from the Andrapradesh state was finally accepted from his torn-off expired passport copy.

However, the Deputy Consular of Indian Consulate Dubai called Smt. Janakidevi and entrusted to do the necessary things by working with hospital, shelter camp and with the Immigration and Jail authorities by sanctioning the required tickets.

The AOL volunteers worked for 4 days on 24 hour basis to send this person as he was undergoing an agonizing pain. The only strength they received was the unconditional support from the Arab Nationals who were working in the various Governmental departments. But, not surprisingly, somewhere in the space they heard a whisper “ why do you all engaging for this man as if he is a VIP ….?”

In fact this question should be read side by side with the recent survey report of Ministry of UAE authority which has more concern about the virtual charity issues:

“…Only 15 per cent of those surveyed took part in charity activities, according to the findings……” ‘‘…….The authority has set up a separate department to Encourage volunteerism in the community as the survey revealed a low level of participation across different nationalities in charitable activities …….” ( Gulf News / Jan 25-2009 / City of Trust and Tolerance )

Finally this VIP went back to his home country in India on 16.02.09. Yes, the chariot like wheel chair where the VIP was sitting really “escorted” with a volunteer from The Art of Living.
